London Design Week, Victoria & Albert Museum

London, United Kingdom // 2019 // role: Lead Designer and Coordinator // Ibuku

The Bamboo Futures exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum was a major installation at the 2019 London Design Festival. Ibuku was invited to feature a collection of structural bamboo models in the entrance foyer of Blavatnik Hall and I was put in charge of design for the installation.

The installation was designed for the models to be suspended from the ceiling and walls, over the main entrance to the Hall. Due to the museum’s standards, we were not allowed to connect into the walls or ceiling at all and no metal fasteners could be exposed. The main structure is a rented sound and light aluminum rig and we designed it to be completely covered in bamboo laminated plywood by Moso Bamboo with corners capped in full pole blonde bamboo poles we shipped from Bali with the models. Everything was detailed so that all the fasteners and structure were hidden and everything could be assembled in less than 24 hours.
